In a rare evening address from the White House U.S. President Donald Trump took credit for his administration’s achievements while blaming his Democratic predecessor for high consumer prices. Speaking in a fast paced under 20 minute speech Trump claimed that when he took office eleven months ago he inherited a “mess,” and insisted he is fixing it. The president offered few new policy initiatives to tackle affordability instead placing blame on former President Joe Biden previous trade deals immigration and what he described as a corrupt system. He highlighted his administration’s work on reducing border crossings lowering some prices and attracting $18 trillion in investments to create jobs and open factories. Trump announced a one time “warrior dividend” of $1,776 to 1.45 million U.S. service members to be delivered in the coming week. He also endorsed a Republican proposal to send cash directly to Americans to offset healthcare costs rather than subsidies through the Affordable Care Act though the plan has yet to gain sufficient support in Congress. Addressing the economy Trump claimed he is bringing down prices rapidly and said the U.S. is now “the hottest country anywhere in the world.” He also promised to soon announce a new Federal Reserve chair who will support lower interest rates which he said will reduce mortgage payments. Despite Trump’s claims public approval is low. A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows just 33 percent of adults approve of how he has handled the economy. Inflation which hit a four year low of 2.3 percent in April has since climbed to 3 percent year over year in September the highest since January and above levels seen during his first term.
