India has once again claimed the dubious distinction of topping the global list of sports doping offenders for the third consecutive year. According to the World Anti Doping Agency India recorded 260 positive tests in 2024 alone out of more than 7,000 samples collected by the National Anti Doping Agency. Athletics weightlifting and wrestling led the way highlighting a persistent problem across multiple sports.
The findings cast a shadow over India’s ambitions to host major international events including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and potentially the 2036 Olympics. Reports from recent competitions reveal a worrying trend: athletes fleeing events at the sight of anti doping officials reflecting a culture where rules are routinely ignored and oversight is widely flouted.
Despite claims by authorities that testing and awareness programs have increased India remains far ahead of other countries with France Italy Russia and the United States trailing significantly. The International Olympic Committee has repeatedly flagged India’s poor record urging reforms that so far appear largely symbolic rather than effective.
This pattern of repeated violations raises serious questions about the integrity of Indian sport its commitment to fair play and its readiness to host global competitions. The country faces international scrutiny as it struggles to clean up a system where doping has become alarmingly normalized.
