The world’s most visited museum the Louvre in Paris has been forced to close after workers launched a strike on Monday deepening a growing crisis at the iconic landmark.
The strike comes after a turbulent few months for the museum already reeling from a high profile eight minute heist that saw artworks worth eighty eight million euros stolen. Soon after a water leak damaged hundreds of rare journals and books in the Egyptian department raising serious concerns about infrastructure and preservation.
Now staff say worsening working conditions and job cuts have pushed them to the brink. All three major trade unions have announced a rolling strike citing staff shortages closed galleries and declining visitor access.
Workers are also protesting higher ticket prices for non European visitors arguing that tourists are paying more while being denied full access to the collection. Union officials say more than two hundred jobs mainly in security have been cut since twenty fifteen leaving remaining staff overwhelmed.
Despite welcoming nearly nine million visitors last year employees warn the museum is under severe strain saying they now feel like the final line of defense before the Louvre itself begins to collapse.
