Six Bangladeshi United Nations peacekeepers have been killed and six others wounded including four seriously in a drone strike on Sudan’s southern Kordofan region the UN mission confirmed. The attack took place at a camp in Kadugli the capital of South Kordofan where the peacekeepers were stationed as part of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei or UNISFA.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the strike calling it “horrific” and warning that such attacks on peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law. He added that accountability will be necessary for this act describing it as completely unjustifiable.
Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow over the attack confirming six deaths and eight injuries among the country’s personnel. He called on the UN to provide all necessary emergency support to the affected troops and pledged that the government would stand by the families during this difficult time. Bangladesh’s foreign ministry also strongly condemned the incident.
UN peacekeepers are deployed to Abyei a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan to monitor tensions and maintain stability. The attack comes amid ongoing conflicts in the region underscoring the increasing risks faced by international peacekeeping forces working in volatile areas.
The UN has called for a thorough investigation into the strike emphasizing the protection of its personnel as paramount.
