Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a strong call to the international community urging global powers to pressure the Afghan Taliban led government in Kabul to honour its responsibilities fulfil its international obligations and address what he warned is a growing terrorism threat emerging from Afghanistan.
Speaking at a major forum marking the International Year of Peace and Trust 2025 as well as key neutrality anniversaries in Turkmenistan the Prime Minister reaffirmed that the peaceful resolution of conflicts remains a central pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy. He said regional peace cannot be achieved without responsible behaviour and meaningful cooperation from Afghanistan’s rulers.
His comments come at a sensitive time. Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sharply deteriorated in recent months as Pakistan continues to face deadly terror attacks which Islamabad says are being carried out by Afghan nationals operating from across the border.
Tensions escalated dramatically in October when Pakistani and Afghan forces engaged in week long border clashes. The violence erupted after Taliban fighters and their allied militants launched what Pakistan described as an unprovoked assault on Pakistani border posts on October 12. While a ceasefire has been in place since then both sides have failed to reach any lasting agreement on how to prevent future cross border attacks.
Prime Minister Shehbaz warned that without serious action from Kabul the threat of terrorism will continue to destabilize the region. He called on the world to support Pakistan’s push for security stability and responsible governance in Afghanistan saying that peace in South Asia hinges on cooperation accountability and a firm stand against those who choose violence over dialogue.
